Although wireless had already saved many lives at sea, it was the Titanic disaster in 1912 that highlighted the importance of wireless as a medium for safety of life at sea (SOLAS). The role of the Radio Officer was elevated to hero status by the actions of Titanic's Radio Officers, Jack Phillips and Harold Bride who remained at their post, trying to summon help until just before Titanic succumbed to the waves.
We have some excellent documentary films on Titanic as part of the "Saving Lives at Sea" area. Included are the stories of her sister ships and some very interesting Welsh connections.
You can hear Titanic's distress messages in Morse code and see the drama unfold on screen as Jack Phillips and Harold Bride desperately call for assistance.
